Take a Kid Fishing
Day - Lunker Landers Bass Club #7
On Saturday May 22nd,
Lunker Landers Bass Club of district #7 held their annual “Take a Kid
Fishing Day” at Lake Carey near Tunkhannock. Nine children were in
attendance from Cub Scout Troop, Pack #693 from Harvey’s Lake. The
scouts who attended earned valuable credit towards their fishing merit
badges.
The event started at 9 am
with fishing tips and lure demonstrations from Lunker Landers members.
Early morning topwater tips were given by Mike Galka. Mike discussed
different topwater baits and when to use them. Doug Wiser demonstrated
how to tie different knots and the importance of line size. Tim Gavek
then showed the children different spinnerbaits and what blade and color
combinations work best in which situations. Ron Walter gave tips on
rigging tubes and why the tube lure is such a versatile and highly
successful bait. Trevor Boyd demonstrated why flipping and pitching a
jig is one of the best ways to fish tight to cover and the different
trailers which can be used to dress up your jigs. Tim Gavek showed the
different styles of crankbaits and demonstrated how the size of the lip
determines the running depth of the bait. Tom Hafner concluded the
seminar with the most important segment of all. Tom told about the
importance of safety on the water, the proper use of a lifejacket, and
what to do in an emergency.
The fishing started at 10 am
with the scouts being paired up with club members before hitting the
water. With clouds in the sky and the threat of rain in the forecast,
the boats headed out of Frank’s Marina hoping to catch a few fish before
the downpour. Rock bass, perch and crappies were the target for our
young anglers who had a lot of success. Fish were caught on a variety of
baits including beetle spins, twister tails, worms, and leeches.
Returning to Frank’s Marina
at noon, the hungry fisherman were treated to a gourmet hot dog barbeque
from chef Skip Robinson as his assistant Joe Culver just as the rain
started to fall. The shower soon passed and it was time to give out the
gifts and trophies to the scouts. Trophies were provided by Lunker
Landers Bass Club and given to every fisherman. Names were then drawn
from a hat for prizes and no one went home empty handed. Prizes given
away included (4) rod and reel combos from Zebco/Quantum, (4)
spinnerbaits and (2) hats from Bumper Stumper Lures, (2) gift
certificates from Brady and Cavany Sporting Goods in Tunkhannock and (2)
tackle boxes filled with tackle and a rod and reel combo from Lunker
Landers.
The day ended with a clean
up of the surrounding area and waterfront to teach the importance of a
clean environment and how we as fishermen are ultimately responsible for
the protection of our waterways and the future of our sport.
Lunker Landers Bass Club
would like to thank the members of Cub Scout Troop Pack #693, the
parents who brought them, and a special thank you to Frank’s Marina for
providing free parking to everyone involved.
