What is the best way to attach flies to fishing hat?I’m making my friend a fly fishing hat for Christmas a la Colonel Henry Blake from M.A.S.H. I need to know the best way to attach the flies and spinners to the hat. Should I sew them on or go with small safety pins? If anyone has done this and can share their ideas, that would be great. Thanks! Thanks for the answer received so far. I should have added, “Without ruining the hat.” Its a really cool, frayed edge, Harley-Davidson bucket hat (the model of his motorcycle) and I don’t want to ruin the hat in case he wants to remove the flies, etc. and wear it. Thanks!

Traditionally, it’s a sheepskin band (sometimes ribbon) that you hook the flies into. Spoons are usually a bit heavy. Flies are carried in the hat band to give them a chance to dry.Blake’s hat had flies all over the side of the crown… pretty much par for Hollywood’s knowledge of fishing. If you’re going to do that, then I’d sew them on. Smaller holes and less stress than safety pins.
